This lip balm is soft and perfect for storing in tins or small glass jars. If you plan to put your lip balm in tubes, add an additional 5 g of beeswax.
Ingredients
10g beeswax
20g sunflower oil
10g coconut oil
15 drops essential oil
1g vitamin E oil
1g calendula oil
Instructions
Coarsely chop the beeswax or use beeswax pastilles. Place beeswax, sunflower and coconut oils in a small pot or glass measuring cup and gently heat in a double boiler until the beeswax and butters have melted. Once melted, remove from stovetop and add essential oils, calendula oil, and vitamin E oil. Mix quickly and immediately pour the balm into your containers. Allow to cool completely before closing the containers. If your balm starts to solidify as you are pouring, stop and reheat briefly.
Interesting fact: Vitamin E prevents the oxidation of oils, which is why it’s called an antioxidant. Vitamin E is not a preservative and cannot be used as one in products containing water.
Notes
Although tubes are easier to use and, some say, more sanitary, most are made of plastic. I’ve used craft paper tubes and I’ve found the technique to push up the lip balm unwieldy. I’ve come to prefer tins; just use clean fingers to apply the balm to your lips.
